Lung Imaging Standardization - Consensus Statement Workshop

Wednesday December 7th 2011, 0700-1230

Edinburgh International Conference Centre, UK

£100 per person (UK Sterling)

This Workshop will present a report from the Committee to Standardize Lung Imaging Techniques to develop guidelines for standardized imaging techniques.

This is one of the projects of the ISAM Regulatory Affairs Assembly and came about because of a Workshop on Demonstrating Bioequivalence (BE) in Locally Acting Orally Inhaled Drugs (OIPs) that was held March 2009 organised by PQRI (Product Quality Research Institute).

At the March 2009 workshop, it was proposed standardization of lung imaging techniques may allow the possibility of developing a PK method for establishing bioequivalence for orally inhaled products. If systemic PK of OIPs (using a charcoal block, or some other technique to block oral absorption) could be shown to be directly related to the dose delivered to the lung and its regional distribution, systemic PK measurements might be used as a surrogate indicator of local activity in the lung and as a method for determining BE. It was agreed, if this method was to move forward, there would need to be a standardized method for quantifying regional lung distribution in lung imaging laboratories.

Standardizing lung imaging techniques would also be useful at this time as there is a need for multi-centre trials to test the efficacy of inhaled drugs in terms. If lung imaging techniques were standardized and similarities in regional deposition of the inhaled drug could be established, several labs could join forces to test that drug much more quickly than if each were working alone."

2012 American Thoracic Society International Conference

May 18-23, 2012
San Francisco, California

At ATS 2012 in San Francisco, more than 400 sessions will provide a comprehensive review of the latest information on the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases, critical illnesses and sleep disorders. In addition, more than 5,500 scientific research abstracts and clinical case reports will be presented, giving attendees new perspectives on the clinical, basic science and translational discoveries that will shape the future of adult and pediatric respiratory care. Among the many topics to be covered are asthma, COPD, lung cancer, obstructive sleep apnea, pulmonary hypertension, cystic fibrosis, ARDS, and sarcoidosis. The Advance Program with registration form will be available in January 2012 at http:conference.thoracic.org.
