The International Society for Aerosols in Medicine (ISAM) was founded in 1970. The objectives of ISAM are to stimulate and further the interdisciplinary cooperation and exchange of information in all aspects of aerosol research in medicine including health effects of inhaled aerosols and pulmonary drug delivery. ISAM sponsors international conferences, publications, study groups and special research projects. To introduce new therapies into practice ISAM has organized educational seminars, and provided advice on basic and advanced levels to staff and international organizations such as WHO and ATS. ISAM is a non-profit organization.

Current ISAM Board Members are: William D. Bennett, President (USA); Gerhard Scheuch, Past-President (Germany); James D. Blanchard, President-Elect (USA); Sunalene Devadason, General Secretary (Australia); Gerald C. Smaldone, JAM Editor (USA), and Bruce Rubin, Treasurer (USA). They are assisted by an international group of 5 additional Board Members: Ralph Niven (USA), David Cipolla (USA), Sabine Haussermann (Germany), Barbara Rothen-Rutishauser (Switzerland), Rajiv Dhand (USA). ISAM sponsors an International Congress every two years. The most recent, was held in Rotterdam (Netherlands) in June 2011. The next Congress will be held in Chapel Hill, NC (USA) in April 2013. If you have a special interest in aerosols, you should be a member of ISAM. Currently, there are over 400 members. They represent different disciplines connected to aerosols in the lung, e.g. physicians, physicists, biologists, pharmacologists, respiratory care practitioners, mathematicians and others.

The Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery, also known as JAMPDD, is the official Journal of ISAM. Published quarterly by Mary Ann Liebert Inc., JAMPDD serves as a forum for studies involving inhalation of particles and gases in the respiratory tract, including the use of aerosols as tools to study basic structural and functional phenomena, their use as selective delivery systems for medication and the toxic effects of inhaled agents. Gerald C. Smaldone, MD PhD (Stony Brook, NY) is the Editor, assisted by an international Editorial Board of 37 members. The Journal is indexed by the major electronic indices and available electronically and in hardcopy to members of ISAM.
